The Problems with Perfectionism

You might struggle with perfectionism. It is a growing problem and it’s becoming a real decision killer. Perfectionism leads to analysis paralysis, fear of being wrong, and the feeling that what you are doing isn’t good enough for the world to experience.

Now, perfectionism can be a great quality to have when it’s being used in the right way at the right time. So much of new startups and success is a process.

When you’re trying to create a high profit, low maintenance business relationship, it is about that specific time and place.  It’s about fully engaging the other person and learning about them.  When you start that initial conversation you should be prepared!

[blur]Connecting with someone is a process and it doesn’t mean it has to grow into a full joint venture relationship. Sometimes you are just exchanging learning experiences, growing pains, and potential connections.

The reason why we do brainstorms, and heart-storms is because we want to give ourselves permission and a safe place to just throw out everything we are thinking and feeling.  If we edited every thought, feeling, and idea, a lot of good ones would be lost for sure!

Sometimes good has to be good enough.

Maurice Chevalier once said, “If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive. Mountains will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved.

In the past, I’ve done projects for companies where I have seen the difference from their old websites and new websites. There’s almost always a big difference. Yet, what if they waited until they made the perfect website? I guarantee you they would have lost out on big opportunities.

I have also seen companies hire better people over the years. I have seen singers put out better albums over time and even athletes improve their shots.

But what if the companies hold out until they could afford that six-figure executive? Well, they would probably never make enough money to get one if they had open spots unfilled.  What if the singer never put out their first album until every note was perfect?  What if that athlete waited until they made 100% of their plays before arriving at the game?

To be a speaker, your first time will not be easy. The presentation will have some spelling errors, your microphone may give you feedback, people in the audience will get up and walk around, but if you waited for the perfect time and place, you will miss your chance.

Fail forward. Do the best you can with what you have to work with and what you can afford.  As you have more time, money and resources go out and get better.  Raise the bar.

“My mantra has always been to have zero regrets in life. Everything I do at one speed, I go all-out” – Apolo Ohno
